Shredding Despair: How SCC Turned Unwanted Documents Into a Beacon of Hope for SAFE Shelter

A Legacy of Love

Skidaway Community Church is proud to support the life-changing work of SAFE Shelter Center for Domestic Abuse in Savannah, GA through the annual Shredding Event. As we celebrate our 14th year, we’re reminded of the power of community and the impact we can have when we come together to support those in need.

Humble Beginnings

The first efforts in support of domestic violence victims were made with a church gathering, called The Crabbing, at the home of Don and Sandy Mayer. That event grew after several years into an event at Palmetto Club at The Landings. It continues successfully under the Safe Shelter Board as the Annual Twilight Ball.

Then, 14 years ago, SCC added our support through the Shredding Event, an annual community wide event, held the last weekend in April after tax-season. The shredding began from an idea of Phil and Patt Boggs after the church required services to shred outdated church records and materials. Why not let the community bring their unneeded paper and help raise funds for Safe Shelter’s critical work to support survivors of domestic violence? So it began.

A Safe Refuge

SAFE Shelter offers a lifeline to those who are struggling to escape the cycle of domestic abuse. Since 1979, SAFE Shelter has been Savannah’s only shelter dedicated to victims of intimate partner violence and their underage children. All are accepted regardless of gender, race, culture, or religion. SAFE Shelter provides:

  • Confidential, secure, temporary housing for women and children, as well as male survivors (located at a separate location)
  • 24-hour domestic violence hotline– 24 hours a day, year-round
  • Outreach program/legal advocacy– Survivors in need of legal support are offered counsel and provided a pro bono attorney for hearing.

Safe Shelter is certified through the Governors’ Office of Children and Families. It is a United Way Agency.

A Caring Community Making a Difference

In its first year, the Shredding Event raised $800 for SAFE Shelter. In 2025, donations reached over $16,000, a record we hope to exceed in 2026. SAFE Shelter receives 100% of the donations raised through the Shredding Event.

Our efforts are made possible by the generosity of our Landings and Savannah community, who donate generously to this cause. Today, our annual Shredding Event brings together over 60 volunteers from our church, the Safe Shelter Board, Boy Scout Troop 57, and the community, and services an average of 400 cars, representing thousands of pounds of paper over the course of the three-hour event.

We’re proud to be part of a community that comes together to support those in need. Join us on Saturday, April 25 from 9am-noon, as we celebrate over a decade of supporting Safe Shelter. Every shred, every donation, and every volunteer hour counts. Get involved, bring your documents for shredding, and let’s make a difference together.

How You Can Get Involved:

  • Volunteer with us to make this event a success
  • Invite your firends and family to join in
  • Bring your documents for shredding and/or make a monetary donation for SAFE Shelter on April 25
