An Evening of African American Spirituals
Kimberly Hernandez, mezzo-soprano
Acclaimed opera singer Kimberly Hernandez of Lakeland, Florida, will present a concert of African American spirituals at Skidaway Community Church (50 Diamond Causeway, Savannah) on Wednesday, January 21, at 6:30 pm. SCC music director Nick Klemetson will accompany her.
The program will explore the depth, beauty, and enduring power of the spirituals, songs born out of suffering and hope, faith and perseverance, passed down through generations as expressions of trust in God. The concert aims to honor the historical roots of the spirituals and their lasting significance for all.
“Not only does Kimberly have a world-class operatic voice, but she is also a tremendous soul, with expressive artistry and a love of music of all genres,” says Klemetson. “It is such an honor and privilege to be able to share her gifts with the Savannah community.”
Hernandez is currently the Director of the 8:50 am worship service at All Saints Episcopal Church in Lakeland, Florida. Her recent engagements include the role of “Santuzza” in Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, “Carmen” in Bizet’s Carmen, and appearances with the Ocala Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orlando.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Skidaway Community Church at (912) 598-0151 or nick@skidcc.org.
